You would think, in a digital age such as ours, that collecting and reporting statistics on a population's gaming habits would be simple.  In these days of internet-connected devices you may think data about our games and gaming habits would be streaming to a server somewhere for collection, but alas, that is not the case. Human rights notwithstanding.

Bond University (of Australia) to the rescue with the most comprehensive study to-date of the habits of New Zealand gamers.  The study surveyed 3386 people in over 1200 households and drew some powerful conclusions.

  • 78% of gamers are over 18
  • The average age of gamers is 33
  • 44% of gamers are female
  • 91% of children aged 9 - 15 play games
  • 60% of gamers only play an hour or less in each session
  • Only 4% of gamers play for 4 or more hours in a session
  • 100% (yep, 100%) of households with children 18 or younger have a game-playing device
  • 63% of parents play games
  • 59% of parents play games with kids to spend time with them
  • 64% of parents use games to help educate their children

Relative market sizes in New Zealand (2009):

  • $169,970,000 Cinema box office takings
  • $170,149,000 Video game and console sales
